Frequently Asked Questions

 About Getting Help

May I call to ask a simple question about my child and what’s typical behavior or not?
Of course. Dr. Tester is happy to take phone consultations at no cost.  Call 512.484.4994.

What if it's just a phase?
Some behaviors are just a phase. However, many behaviors will not improve on their own. Behaviors that are causing you and your family difficulties in your everyday happiness and functioning for any significant amount of time may be more than just a phase. The only way to answer this question is by talking to someone with expertise and experience.  Sometimes one appointment is all you need to relieve your concern.  We encourage parents to act early on their concern.

I don't know what to tell my child about coming to Austin Center for Child Psychology. I don’t want my child to think something is wrong with him.
You're not alone if you have this concern. Most children understand that everyone seeks guidance or help when we face problems, and that it is normal to face problems.  We call the doctor when we’re sick, and we seek help from tutors and teachers to better understand concepts.  Most children and adolescents easily accept the explanation that at ACCP, parents and children can learn skills to better manage problems making things better at home and school.

What will the first visit be like?
We typically see parents without the child present during the first visit. Dr. Tester will invite you to discuss your concerns and may ask you questions about your child's interests and behaviors. The second session is usually reserved just for your child or for you and your child (or other family members) depending on your child's age and your what you would like to work on. During this session the focus in on helping your child feel comfortable and engaged in treatment. Depending on your child's age, Dr. Tester might play, talk, or engage in an outdoor activity to help your child become more comfortable sharing information about herself.

Do you see teens and adults?
Yes.  We serve kids from birth to 18+.  We also see young adults in their first few years of college when problems may emerge. Finally, we see parents in individual therapy when they are seeking help with parenting patterns and family functioning.

My teen refuses to go to counseling.  What can I do?
The best thing you can do is seek counseling yourself in order to find ways to reach your teen.

Do you see children in the evening?
Yes.  We can arrange after hours appointments as needed.
